Yahoo! Mail vs Gmail

Like many people, I have both a Gmail account and a Yahoo! Mail account. That's because there are things that I like about each of them enough to not want to get rid of either of them. Despite the fact that they are both email systems, they are strikingly different. If you're going to limit yourself to just one free e-mail account, you'll have to carefully consider your preferences to go with the right one.
Here are some of the differences between Gmail and Yahoo! Mail:

• Attachments. Gmail lets you add attachments in the same screen as the one you're writing your email in. Yahoo moves you to a different screen and makes you add attachments one at a time. To add more than five attachments requires adding addition boxes in which to input information. Some people may find this annoying.
• Chat feature. Although Yahoo! has an IM program, it's not the same Gmail's chat function which is built right into your email. Some people like this option because it makes it easy to send quick messages instead of longer emails when you're conversing with someone else who is already online. However, some people don't want to be seen online when they're answering email and so don't like this Gmail function. Of course, you can opt out of it.
• Contact storage. Gmail and Yahoo! differ slightly in the way that they organize your contacts. Gmail automatically keeps addresses that you've emailed on your contact list unless you delete them. Yahoo is the opposite; you have to manually opt to add them to your address book. The basics are the same but the appearance is a little different so it's a matter of preference. It should be noted that Google is now letting you expand your personal profile so that the contacts you have may provide more information automatically through Google.
• Conversation organization. Gmail keeps your conversation going for you - every time that you reply to someone's email, it automatically gets added to the same conversation thread so you can easily look things up within the conversation again. However, this can be annoying because to change your "subject" line, you have to re-compose a new email which is not true of Yahoo! Mail.
• Folder organization. The main thing about Yahoo! Mail that I prefer is the way that it lets you set up folders and organize your information. Google lets you label your folders but they're all kept in basically the same places. (They're in your inbox or they can be archived.) In contrast, you can create many different folders on Yahoo! which makes more organizational sense for my work.
• Professional credibility. Most people who use their email accounts for professional reasons don't use a free account at all. However, those that do almost always go with Gmail. It is considered to be the more professional of accounts and lends greater credibility to freelancers and home business owners who receive email from clients and investors. Gmail recently added a function that lets you set up an email account with your own domain name so that you can get some serious professionalism from it. Although Yahoo! Mail accounts are common, they aren't considered quite as professional by the average person working online today.
• Spam folders. In my experience, Yahoo! Mail gets more spam. Additionally, I've had more problems with my Yahoo! inbox mail and spam mail getting tossed into the wrong folder than I've had with Gmail. But that could be just one user's experience and not indicative of the whole situation.

For the most part, I prefer Gmail to Yahoo! Mail. However, there are benefits to both of them. And either can be good as a free account. Just don't go with Hotmail.

Is Facebook Dying? Yes, But It's Far From Dead

Today I realised something, people are using Facebook less. I think I actually first realized this a few months ago, but today it really hit me. I have almost 400 'friends' on fb and yet it can go for as long as half an hour without any activity showing from any of them, my wife stopped uploaded pictures to Facebook a long time ago, and the list of people showing online for me is never more than twenty or twenty five. A year ago this would have been unimaginable, it seemed as if people couldn't stop giving a running commentary of their day at work, every meal, even informing the world when they took a dump. I seldom see an album of photos these days, yet alone a nice dump status.

Is Facebook Dying?

Obviously my sample of 400 people, mostly from the United Kingdom, on a site with well over half a billion registered members worldwide can't be taken as conclusive evidence of a Myspaceesque demise, so I went on the search for further information. It turns out that I'm not the first people to notice, in fact there is some pretty damning evidence out there to suggest that Facebook has indeed peaked - at least it has in the developed world. According to various analysed advertising statistics, Facebook is said to have lost 5% of US users in May 2011 alone, equivalent to 6 million users and estimated to have resulted in the number of American users falling from 155 million to 149 million. During the same month it also lost a significant number of users from the following countries:

• Canada
• United Kingdom
• Norway

The overall user base was still fast increasing at that stage, gaining tens of millions of new users from developing nations such as Brazil, India, and Mexico. The most valuable advertising markets are shrinking, revenues from developing nations such as India remain a pittance when compared to advertising rates for traffic from the US, UK, and Canada. Despite there being less American users, Quantcast estimate that the number of unique visits from US based surfers has continued to rise, suggesting that the remaining users have actually been using the site more, see the graph below.

The graph shows the growth of Facebook (gray) in relation to the growth of YouTube (blue) and Twitter (red), the two giants have flat-lined over the past year whilst Twitter has continued to grow at an incredibly fast pace.

Why Are People Leaving Facebook?

There are a number of common reasons that US, UK, and Canadian users have given for deactivating or deleting their Facebook accounts, but the most significant ones are ongoing privacy concerns and pure boredom. People got bored of Myspace, people got bored of Friendster, and now people are getting bored of Facebook. It's just a natural cycle but it won't fill the markets with much confident when Facebook complete a stock market launch, the IPO is scheduled for April 2012, employees will be worried that their stock options are not going mature at their peak. The likelihood is of course that the markets will actually go into a frenzy, as they always do with major tech stocks, and the price will become over-inflated rather than in any way deflated by these statistics

E-Commerce with the power of Facebook

E-Commerce with the power of Facebook

Facebook has created a platform where people stay connected and share their ideas. The platform’s unprecedented success has brought millions of people to one spot in cyberspace to “congregate.” Such a huge natural audience has encouraged people and businesses to exhibit merchandise of all types as a normal outcome. New marketing jargon has even been created as “social commerce” has grown, and people can now easily buy and sell while being connected on Facebook.
It is interesting to note that many brands have not yet taken this platform seriously. Polls show us that many companies are interested in it, but that less than 10% of them had enabled actual e-commerce on Facebook, and surprisingly, about 20% still had no presence on Facebook at all. Obviously, many brands still have not figured out how to translate their physical presence to Facebook, and fewer still know how to set up a Facebook storefront platform capable of completing sales.
Social commerce on the Facebook platform gives it a supreme advantage over other forms of e-commerce by involving “friends” in buying, selling, and referral transactions. Word of mouth is still an excellent marketing technique, and Facebook kicks it up several notches.
Storefront applications are the software tools with which sellers can integrate their Facebook pages with the e-commerce functionality. As there is lot of speculation about social marketing becoming such a prominent business model, there are many vendors utilizing storefront applications for Facebook. These applications offer a simplified way to set up the stores and provide the interface to have your products accessible via Facebook pages. You set up an account with the app provider and go to the application page on their website to set up your storefront. Following the instructions there makes it possible to add the products, product images, and relevant descriptions.
The applications will provide features for multiple categories of products and options for choosing different colors and sizes. The software will also provide you with data for sales and visitors so that you can have full reports and see how long people stayed on your storefront, what they looked at, and things they are most interested in. All of this is great information for future promotions. There are also additional functional features for storefront apps, including payment processing, content management, order management, customer relationship management, reporting, and shipping.
Facebook has made it possible to present your products and services to the online world at absolutely no cost. The 750 million users offer a tremendous potential for selling products of all kinds. The community spirit, on which Facebook is built, helps in marketing the products by assisting with an otherwise more expensive route of brand building. The greatest advantage is the ease with which customers, vendors, and other Facebook users can converse and create an awareness of products.
If you have a product or service to market, take advantage of Facebook storefront apps to sell online for free.

Facebook blamed: For kids’ low exam grades?

Facebook fever has bitten almost everybody and the most affected are the children, aged 12 to 17. The youth is not interested in going outdoors and socializing with real friends, instead they are happy in their small virtual world. Lack of physical activities and gluing to their computer screen has bought many changes in these new age children. Most of the parents do not even know, what is their child up to and how much time is he spending on the internet. Because of this Facebook mania, the studies of the youth have gone for a toss. People are getting addicted to social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Myspace etc.
According to a recent survey, Two-third of the parents has held responsible the social networking sites, like Facebook, for their children’s low grades. They claim their children are so addicted to Facebook, that they are not able to concentrate on their studies and more inclined towards chatting with their friends.
Children between 12 to 17 years want to be updated about every change on Facebook and do not use the internet for studying purpose.
If we look at the daily report, then half of the children spend their time on various social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, or Myspace; 40 percent like to listen to music on the internet and only 16 percent is interested in using internet as a medium for helping out with their studies.
In a recent survey, when 4,427 parents were quizzed regarding their children’s internet usage, half of them did not even know what their children do on the internet and how much are they devoting towards their studies.
76 percent Parents are so much fed up with these social networking sites and seeing their children’s studies suffer, that they want to take the responsibility of putting a restriction on home computers.
The famous broadband provider Talktalk is preparing to launch a system that allows the parents to see and restrict what their child does on the internet. According to this system, the parents would be able to create homework time on the internet, when all the social networking sites would be blocked and the children will have no other options than concentrating on their studies.
Teachers have also confirmed the effect of these social networking sites on the students and blame it for their poor concentration. They say that either they do not complete their homework, because of spending time on these sites; or if they do, the quality of work is very poor, as they are in a rush to complete and then chat with their friends on these websites.
These networking sites have really made this world an oyster, but too much of everything is bad. Children are our future and these social networking sites will do them no good. They need to understand, that they live in a real world and not everything that they see in this virtual world may be real.
