The LG Optimus 3D smart phone is the first smart phone launched containing a glasses free three-dimension display. The phone enables its users to capture still photos and record videos in full high definition, three dimensions and play them back in 3D on its 4.3-inch display.
Just as all other electronic merchandise ever built, the device has its pros and cons. The 3D effect on the phone is clear and easy to spot. It is a bit dimmer than the two-dimension version simply because the screens pixilation is split into two images. For the same reason, one can spot two vertical dark lines. Works in landscape mode and one has to hold the phone at just the right angle to get the 3D effects without insinuating double vision.
The phone comes pre-loaded with a hand-full of applications, games and videos to enable its user to enjoy 3D straight from the box. If you do not fancy 3D, you can switch it off by the use of an on-screen slider. This feature makes the phone more interactive as the user has options as to how he wants to watch his videos or how he wants to perform his gaming among others.
Stills or photos and videos are easy to shoot in 3D and the results are marvelous due to detail and depth. Only annoying thing about the shooting is that the camera always seemed to default back to 2D every time the camera is initializes. The phone contains a HDMI port enabling the user to hook up the phone to a bigger screen. Alternatively, the phone can connect wirelessly to a screen if the screen in question supports DLNA.
Having 3D in the phone definitely has its negative side. The phone is heavy and bulky. Compared to its 2D counterpart, Optimus 2x, it is thirty grammes heavier, four millimeters wider and 2mm thicker. Another issue is that the 3D effect appears only in a handful of games and films on the handset and you have to place the cell phone in the right location to encounter the effect.
The phone is an excellent Smartphone with the Android 2.3 Froyo in command as its operating system. However, LGs version of android is not as soft and suave as that of most of its competitors. Overall, the phone is a niche less stylish than Samsung or the dominative HTC android phone.
Beneath the phone HD 4.3 inch display, sit four touch buttons. The buttons have an unusual or strange order, which may be striving with LG trying to be exclusive in every aspect. The buttons are backlit but problem is that they are only backlit when touched. This aspect makes the backlit somehow useless there is not a point whatsoever for a button to light up when you have touched a wrong one. This therefore makes the feature to be a bit misplaced.
Only interesting exterior design feature is the metallic strip along the phones rear housing the phones two-camera sensors and its LED flash. The strip can be termed as a welcome distraction to the monotonous cover of black plastic. The rest of the phone gives the look of the ultra modern smart phone layout.
Conclusion
The phone can be positively acclaimed to be the first phone to deliver glasses free 3D. The optimus 3D achieves a solid job in creation and display of 3D right on the move. But if you are not at all excited about 3D, the phone is a smart and powerful android based phone with a host of applications to keep you on your toes. Its only limitations can be termed as its bulkiness and a somewhat lack on stylishness both inside and outside.
